For those of you who haven't heard, This week Louisiana went under a state of emergency. Basically there was a huge rainstorm and now there is flooding state wide.
My week has been totally crazy.
"21 [counties] under states of Emergency. Over 1000 rescues. 2 deaths (as of the 13th) Several missing. Storm very slowly moving west. Request to the president being worked on for federal aid. 1000 Nat guard troops here. other 250 on the way. FEMA here and helping state. over 100 roads and highways closed (due to flooding) they've run out of "road closed" signs. Red Cross and state working together to get food and water to all shelters, all over the state. Update from Governor. Press conference."
In the midst of disasters like this people show who they really are. Some people are very selfish. Some people give EVERYTHING to help others. and then gain much more in return.
"we know that all things work together for good to them that love God" Romans 8:28
Too many people I know have been affected by this storm. It seems that just about all of Louisiana besides NOLA has been affected. Im grateful That New Orleans Is safe. I would be heartbroken if it had got it down there as well.
Me and Elder Roskelley have been working harder then I feel I have ever worked in order to help people.
There is a shelter in Amite we have spent the last 3 days working at. it was projected to be open for only 3 days. It is now to be open indefinitely until there is nobody left to house. When we first came there to help there was probably 15-20 people there. Now there is well over 100 and they're getting more people everyday. I know just about all of them by name. I've got a story for each one. Lately in my journal I've just been writing down there names and a brief note since there is so little time to record everything that has happened. Some have lost everything. Some, have lost most everything, Some were just traveling and got swept away in the storm and lost their vehicle. There was 1 man who lost his Semi truck and everything that was on it. We will probably be going back there today. after we're done emailing, we're going to call every member in our branch area to do a double check on them and then head over to the shelter. Some of the people there are our investigators. Some are members. Some are members that we didn't know were even in Louisiana!
There are too many disasters and yet so many miracles that have occurred in the past 3 days to share them all. God's hand is right here in front of us. We have seen amazing things. I know HE is near.
Our branch presidency got 4 feet of water in there homes. They are basically homeless now. With nothing. Hopefully insurance can help them out. I have been amazed and impressed by some of there faith. They keep calling us to ask how the branch is doing. We have kind of become the central hub for information for our branch.
I would share pictures but theres probably already enough on the internet.
Me and Elder Roskelley have been perfectly safe. Our main concern is the people right now. They take up every though of my mind.
Faithfully,
-Elder Davis
